Abstract Sheep production systems face numerous challenges, which make decision-making a process fraught with risks and uncertainties. Modelling is a helpful tool in this respect, as it allows decision-makers to evaluate the behaviour of variables and their interrelationships, in addition to using previous or related information to predict results and simulate different scenarios. The advent of prediction models has made it possible to monitor the weight of an animal and determine the best time for its sale. Additionally, it allows producers to estimate the weights of the carcass and major marketable cuts before slaughter. All this information is directly associated with the profitability and success of the production activity. Therefore, in view of the different applications of mathematical models in production systems, this literature review examines concepts in modelling studies and the importance of using prediction models in meat sheep production. Furthermore, it addresses the practical application of modelling studies in predicting dry matter intake and carcass traits of meat sheep through correlated variables.

Resumen Los sistemas de producción ovina se enfrentan a numerosos desafíos, que hacen de la toma de decisiones un proceso lleno de riesgos e incertidumbres. En este sentido, la modelación es una herramienta útil, ya que permite a los tomadores de decisiones evaluar el comportamiento de las variables y sus interrelaciones, además de utilizar información previa o relacionada para predecir resultados y simular diferentes escenarios. El advenimiento de los modelos de predicción ha permitido monitorear el peso de un animal y determinar el mejor momento para su venta. Además, permite a los productores estimar los pesos de la canal y los principales cortes comercializables antes del sacrificio. Toda esta información está directamente asociada a la rentabilidad y el éxito de la actividad productiva. Por lo tanto, en vista de las diferentes aplicaciones de los modelos matemáticos en los sistemas de producción, esta revisión de la literatura examina los conceptos en los estudios de modelación y la importancia de utilizar modelos de predicción en la producción de ovinos de carne. Además, aborda la aplicación práctica de los estudios de modelación en la predicción de la ingesta de materia seca y los rasgos de la canal de ovinos de carne a través de variables correlacionadas.

Abstract Searching for improvements in semen cryopreservation, natural substances are commonly studied focusing to improve the sperm quality. The aim of this study were evaluated the effect of adding orange, pineapple, and beet juices in different concentrations and combinations to the ram semen cryopreservation extender. Five ejaculates from five adult rams were used. The semen pool was diluted in egg yolk-based extender and mixed with the following 15 treatments (at a final concentration of 400.106 sptz/mL): orange 10% (O10) and 15% (O15); pineapple 10% (P10) and 15% (P15); beet 10% (B10) and 15% (B15); pineapple + orange 10% (PO10) and 15% (PO15); pineapple + beet 10% (PB10) and 15% (PB15); beet + orange 10% (BO10) and 15% (BO15); pineapple + beet + orange 10% (PBO10) and 15% (PBO15); and the control group (CON). Post-thaw in 0.25 mL straws semen quality analysis of cryopreserved semen was performed by CASA and flow cytometry. Analysis of variance (PROC GLM) was carried out and the averages were compared using the SNK test. Pearson's correlation test was also performed. No effect was noted in the addition of juices to the semen extender prior to cryopreservation. Post-thawed, although, statistically similar to the control group, the total motility of the B10 group reached acceptable standards of total motility. In addition, B10 group showed the highest values (p<0.05) of progressive motility than control group or other treatments. The addition of 10% beet juice to the ram semen extender can improve the cryopreservation of sperm motility.

Resumo Em busca de melhorias na criopreservação do sêmen, substâncias naturais são comumente estudadas com o objetivo de melhorar a qualidade do sêmen. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da adição de sucos de laranja, abacaxi e beterraba em diferentes concentrações e combinações ao diluidor de criopreservação de sêmen ovino. Foram utilizados cinco ejaculados de cinco carneiros adultos. O pool de sêmen foi diluído em diluente à base de gema de ovo e misturado com os seguintes 15 tratamentos (na concentração final de 400x10⁶ sptz/ml): laranja 10% (O10) e 15% (O15); abacaxi 10% (P10) e 15% (P15); beterraba 10% (B10) e 15% (B15); abacaxi + laranja 10% (PO10) e 15% (PO15); abacaxi + beterraba 10% (PB10) e 15% (PB15); beterraba + laranja 10% (BO10) e 15% (BO15); abacaxi + beterraba + laranja 10% (PBO10) e 15% (PBO15); e o grupo controle (CON). Pós-descongelação em palhetas de 0,25 ml a análise da qualidade do sêmen criopreservado foi realizada pelo CASA e citometria de fluxo. A análise de variância foi realizada e as médias comparadas pelo teste SNK. O teste de correlação de Pearson também foi realizado. Nenhum efeito foi observado na adição de sucos ao diluidor de sêmen antes da criopreservação. Após o descongelamento, embora estatisticamente semelhante ao grupo controle, a motilidade total do grupo B10 atingiu padrões aceitáveis de motilidade total. Além disso, o grupo B10 apresentou os maiores valores (p<0,05) de motilidade progressiva que o grupo controle ou os outros tratamentos. A adição de 10% de suco de beterraba ao diluente de sêmen ovino pode melhorar a criopreservação da motilidade espermática.

Resumen El objetivo fue identificar la especie, prevalencia, manifestaciones clínicas y evaluar la eficacia de dos tratamientos para el control de piojos en búfalos de agua del trópico de México. Se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo prospectivo, con visitas semanales a un rancho de búfalos durante dos meses. Se inspeccionaron 300 búfalas, para conocer la prevalencia y especie de piojo, adicionalmente en dos grupos de 20 búfalos se describieron lesiones en piel y el nivel de infestación. En dos grupos de 10 animales se aplicaron los tratamientos: 1) cipermetrina (15%) + diclorvos (30%) por aspersión y 2) ivermectina 1% vía subcutánea (0.2 mg/kg1 de pv). Se determinó que la prevalencia de la infestación fue del 100% en el hato y se identificó al piojo como Haematopinus tuberculatus. Las infestaciones por piojos adultos fueron bajas en el 60% de las búfalas y del 95% en los bucerros. La eficacia de los insecticidas fue de 80% en búfalas y 100% en bucerros.

Abstract The objective was to identify the species, prevalence, clinical manifestations and two treatments to control an outbreak of lice in water buffalo in the tropics of Mexico. A prospective descriptive observational study was carried out, with weekly visits for two months to a buffalo farm. A total of 300 female buffaloes were inspected to determine the prevalence and species of louse. The level of infestation by adult lice and skin lesions (n = 40) were determined, and two treatments were applied in two groups (n = 10), cypermethrin (15%) + dichlorvos (30%) was applied by spray and ivermectin 1% subcutaneous route (0.2 mg/kg1 of bw). The prevalence of the infestation was 100%, the louse was identified as Haematopinus tuberculatus. Adult lice infestations were low in 60% of buffaloes and 95% in calves. The efficacy of the insecticides was 80% in buffaloes and 100% in calves.

Abstract: The aim was to evaluate the post-weaning growth of Pelibuey lambs under different types of feeding, considering the cost-benefit ratio (RCB) and profitability. Thirty lambs of 13.14 ± 2.87 kg and 60 days old were used, individual housing, for a period of 49 days. Three feedstuffs were evaluated: Starter (I), Weaning and growing (DyD), and I plus DyD, in a ratio of 50: 50% (I+DyD), with 10 repetitions each. ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of the type of feeding on daily weight gain (GDP), daily feed consumption (COA), feed conversion (CA) and final weight (PF). Except for CA (P < 0.05), the type of feeding did not significantly affect PF, GDP and COA (P > 0.05). The RCB and profitability were slightly higher with feed I+DyD compared to I and DyD. In conclusion, I+DyD was productive and economically more profitable than I and DyD.

Resumen: El objetivo fue evaluar el crecimiento post-destete de corderos Pelibuey bajo diferentes tipos de alimentación, considerando la relación costo-beneficio (RCB) y la rentabilidad. Se utilizaron 30 corderos de 13.14 ± 2.87 kg y 60 días de edad, alojados individualmente, por un periodo de 49 días. Se evaluaron tres alimentos: Iniciador (I), Destete y Desarrollo (DyD), e I más DyD, en proporción de 50:50% (I+DyD), con 10 repeticiones cada uno. Se usó ANOVA para evaluar el efecto del tipo de alimentación sobre la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP), el consumo diario de alimento (COA), la conversión alimenticia (CA) y peso final (PF). Excepto para CA (P < 0.05), el tipo de alimentación no afecto PF, GDP y COA (P > 0.05). La RCB y la rentabilidad fue mayor con el alimento I+DyD en comparación con I y DyD. El tratamiento I+DyD fue más productivo y económicamente más rentable que I y DyD.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of weaning weight on the productive performance of fattening lambs in raised pens. Data from 932 lambs from one farm over a period of two years were analyzed. The statistical model included the fixed effects of weaning weight (<11, 12-14, 15-17, >18 kg), year (2012 and 2013), season of the year (rainy, dry and northern winds) and simple significant interactions of year × season and theresidual error, NID (0, σ2e) on average daily weight gain (GDP, g/d), final weight (PF, kg) and fattening period (PE, days). Weaning weight affected all the response varia- bles evaluated (p<0.05). The weaned lambs between 12-14, 15-17 and >18 kg had a similar GDP, and in turn obtained a higher GDP than the weaned lambs with lower weight (<11 kg; p<0.05). The PF was similar for lambs weaned at 15-17 and >18 kg but higher than that obtained by lambs weaned at <11 kg (p<0.05). The PE was different (p<0.05) for each group of weaning weight, being greater the lower the weaning weight. In conclusion, weaning weight is a factor that affects the GDP, PF and PE of lambs in raised pens.

RESUMEN El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el efecto del peso al destete sobre el comportamiento productivo de corderos de engorda en corrales elevados. Se analizaron datos en un periodo de dos años de 932 corderos de una granja. El modelo estadístico incluyó los efectos fijos del peso al destete (<11, 12-14, 15-17, >18 kg), el año (2012 y 2013), la época del año (lluvias, secas y nortes) y las interacciones simples significativas del año × la época del año y el error residual, NID (0, σ2e) sobre la ganancia diaria de peso posdestete (GDP, g/d), el peso final (PF, kg) y el periodo de engorda (PE, días). El peso al destete afectó todas las variables de respuesta evaluadas (p<0.05). Los corderos destetados entre los 12-14, 15-17 y >18 kg, tuvieron una GDP similar, y a su vez obtuvieron una mayor GDP que los corderos destetados con menor peso (<11 kg; p<0.05). El PF fue similar para los corderos destetados con 15-17 y >18 kg, superior al obtenido por los corderos destetados a los <11 kg (p<0.05). El PE fue diferente (p<0.05) para cada grupo de peso al destete, siendo mayor para los de menor peso al destete. En conclusión, el peso al destete es un factor que afecta la GDP, PF y PE de corderos en corrales elevados.

Abstract Hair sheep are essential for meat production in tropical regions, where feed efficiency has been little evaluated. Feed consumption represents more than 70 % of the costs. Therefore, animals with high feed efficiency could increase the profitability of the production system. There exist tools that help select individuals with increased feed efficiency without compromising the quality of the product. This review aims to identify these genetic-molecular and statistical tools, such as residual feed intake (RFI) and residual intake and gain (RIG). Previous studies report differences ranging from 9 to 30 % in the dry matter intake (DMI) of efficient and inefficient animals, maintaining a similar daily weight gain (DWG) using the RFI index. Moreover, the DMI is similar using the RIG index. Although, the DWG of efficient animals is higher by up to 50 g d-1, reducing feed conversion by one kg. This difference is attributed to a group of genes associated with feed efficiency (Adra2a, Gfra1, Gh, Glis1, Il1rapl1, Lep, Lepr, Mc4r, Oxsm, Pde8b, Rarb, Ryr2, Sox5, Sox6, and Trdn). These genes could be used to select hair sheep with high feed efficiency, considering the genes associated with meat quality (Capns1, Cast, Dgat1, Fabp4, Igf-i, Lep, Mstn, and Scd).

Resumen Los ovinos de pelo desempeñan un papel importante en la producción de carne en zonas tropicales, donde los estudios de eficiencia alimenticia han sido poco evaluados. El consumo de alimento representa más del 70 % de los costos; por lo tanto, la selección de animales con alta eficiencia alimenticia puede mejorar la rentabilidad del sistema de producción. Se han desarrollado herramientas que permiten seleccionar individuos con mayor eficiencia alimenticia sin comprometer la calidad del producto. Por lo que esta revisión tiene la finalidad de identificar estas herramientas genético-moleculares y estadísticas, como son, el consumo de alimento residual (CAR) y ganancia e ingesta residual (GIR). En la literatura consultada, se reportan diferencias en el consumo de materia seca (CMS) en un rango del 9 al 30 % entre animales eficientes e ineficientes, manteniendo una ganancia diaria de peso (GDP) similar empleando el índice CAR. Por otro lado, utilizando el índice GIR los CMS son similares, aunque la GDP en animales eficientes es mayor hasta en 50 g día-1, reduciendo la conversión alimenticia en un kilo. Esta diferencia se asume a un conjunto de genes asociados a la eficiencia alimenticia (Adra2a, Gfra1, Gh, Glis1, Il1rapl1, Lep, Lepr, Mc4r, Oxsm, Pde8b, Rarb, Ryr2, Sox5 y Sox6, Trdn), que pudieran ser utilizados para la selección de ovinos de razas de pelo con alta eficiencia alimenticia, teniendo en cuenta los genes relacionados con la calidad de carne (Capns1, Cast, Dgat1, Fabp4, Igf-i, Lep, Mstn y Scd).

Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of restricted suckling and nutritional complementation on weight gain and postpartum anestrus, in beef cattle, for which 120 lactating Simbrah cows were used, distributed in four treatments: T1) continuous suckling with food complementation (ACCCA, n=30), T2) restricted suckling without food complementation (ARSCA, n=30), T3) restricted suckling with food complementation (ARCCA, n=30) and T4) continuous suckling without food complementation (ACSCA, n=30). Results were evaluated through analysis of variance in a 2x2 factorial arrangement, Chi-square and simple correlation. Weight gain (g/day) and estrus weight (kg) in T3 cows were higher (0.926 and 551.0) compared to T1 (0.425 and 535.0), T2 (0.544 and 545.8) and T4 (0.194 and 501.0), respectively (P<0.01). Postpartum anestrus (days) was lower in T3 (85.5) compared to T1 (185.6), T2 (158.0) and T4 (259.2) (P<0.01). Pregnancy rate (%) was higher in T3 (86.6, 26/30) with respect to T1 (60.0, 18/30), T2 (70.0, 21/30) and T4 (40.0, 12/30) (P< 0.05). An effect was found on the type of suckling and CA. In conclusion, the ARCCA increases pregnancy rate and decreases postpartum anestrus in Simbrah cows in the tropics.

Resumen El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el efecto del amamantamiento restringido y la complementación alimenticia sobre las ganancias de peso y anestro posparto, en bovinos de carne, para lo cual se utilizaron 120 vacas Simbrah lactantes, distribuidas en cuatro tratamientos: T1) amamantamiento continuo con complementación alimenticia (ACCCA; n=30), T2) amamantamiento restringido sin complementación alimenticia (ARSCA; n=30), T3) amamantamiento restringido con complementación alimenticia (ARCCA, n=30) y T4) amamantamiento continuo sin complementación alimenticia (ACSCA, n=30). Los resultados fueron evaluados mediante análisis de varianza en un arreglo factorial 2x2, Chi- cuadrada y correlación simple. La ganancia de peso (g/ día) y peso al estro (kg) en las vacas del T3 fue mayor (0.926 y 551.0) comparado con T1 (0.425 y 535.0), T2 (0.544 y 545.8) y T4 (0.194 y 501.0), respectivamente (P<0.01). El anestro posparto (días) fue menor en T3 (85.5) comparado con T1(185.6), T2 (158.0) y T4 (259.2) (P<0.01). La tasa de gestación (%) fue mayor en T3 (86.6, 26/30) con respecto a T1 (60.0, 18/30), T2 (70.0, 21/30) y T4 (40.0, 12/30) (P<0.05). Se encontró efecto por tipo de amamantamiento y CA. En conclusión, el ARCCA eleva la tasa de preñez y disminuye el anestro posparto en vacas Simbrah en el trópico.

Abstract In sheep silvopastoral systems, forage legumes are promising alternatives to commercial feed since they can lower costs. An evaluation was done comparing productive and ingestive behavior parameters in hair sheep in silvopastoral and stabled systems for four months. Nine variables were evaluated: dry matter intake (DMI); organic matter intake (OMI); crude protein intake (CPI); neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI); daily weight gain (DWG); feeding time (FT); rumination (RT); walking (WT); and other activities time (OAT). Experimental animals were eighteen sheep (initial weight= 16.83 x 2.57 kg) distributed in a completely random design, with three treatments: a silvopastoral system (SPS) including the legume Leucaena leucocephala and the grass Cynodon plectostachyus (L+E); another SPS including L. leucocephala and the grass Panicum maximum (L+M); and a stabled weight-gain system (SWS). Orthogonal contrasts were applied to compare the SWS vs SPSs and the two SPSs. Compared to the two SPSs, all intakes (DMI= 1246.2 g; OMI= 1073.0 g; CPI= 157.1 g; and NDFI= 364.0 g animal d-1) and DWG (195 g animal d-1) were higher (P<0.001) in the SWS. Daily weight gain did not differ between the SPSs (102 and 114 g animal d-1), but all intakes were higher (P<0.001) in L+M (DMI= 772.2 g; OMI= 662.7 g; CPI= 124.0 g; and NDFI= 334.2 g animal d-1) than in L+E (DMI= 548.9 g; OMI= 86.20 g; CPI= 483.0 g; NDFI= 252.3 g animal d-1). Feeding time (FT) was shortest (P<0.001) in the SWS (148.33 min). Between the SPSs, FT was shortest (P<0.05) in the L+E (318.3 min) than in the L+M (344.6 min). Time dedicated to other activities was longer (P<0.001) in the SWS (247.9 min) than in the SPSs. Silvopastoral systems combining legumes and grasses provided sufficient growth in hair sheep although the stabled weight gain system produced faster growth in the studied time period.

Resumen El objetivo fue comparar los parámetros de comportamiento productivo e ingestivo de ovinos alimentados en sistemas silvopastoriles y confinamiento. Se evaluaron los consumos de materia seca (CMS), de materia orgánica (CMO), de proteína cruda (PC) y de fibra detergente neutro (CFDN), la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP), el tiempo dedicado al consumo (TPC), a la rumia (TPR), a caminar (TPCM) y otras actividades (TPOA), en 18 ovinos con peso inicial de 16.83 ± 2.57 kg, distribuidos en un diseño completamente al azar, con tres tratamientos: dos tipos de sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP): 1) Leucaena leucocephala y Cynodon plectostachyus (L+E); 2) L. leucocephala y Panicum maximum (L+M); 3) Sistema de engorda en confinamiento (SEC). Se realizaron contrastes ortogonales para comparar el SEC vs los SSP y entre los SSP. Se encontró un mayor (P<0.001) CMS, CMO, CPC, CFDN y GDP en el SEC (1246.2, 1073.0, 157.1, 364.0 y 195 g animal día-1, respectivamente) comparado con los tipos de SSP. Los CMS, CMO, CPC y CFDN fueron mayores (P<0.001) en el L+M (772.2, 662.7, 124.0, 334.2 g animal día-1, respectivamente) que en L+E (548.9, 86.20, 483.0, 252.3 g, respectivamente); aunque la GDP fue similar en ambos SSP (102 y 114 g). El SEC resultó con un menor (P<0.001) TPC (148.33 min) que los SSP. Animales en L+E invirtieron menos (P<0.05) TPC (318.3 min) que en L+M (344.6 min). Animales en SEC utilizan mayor (P<0.001) TPOA (247.9 min) que en los SSP. Sin embargo, el TPOA fue similar entre los SSP.

Abstract The aim of this study was to characterize the technological level (TL), age and weight at puberty and first service in Romosinuano (RO) heifers in Mexico. Ten production units (PU) were used. The PU have 30.0%, 40.0%, and 30.0% of low, medium, and high TL, respectively. Age (months) and weight at puberty (kg), according to the TL of the PU, were 22.0 ± 2.0 and 305.4 ± 15.3 for low TL, 20.2 ± 1.0 and 326.3 ± 10.0 for medium TL and 18.0 ± 1.6 and 340.2 ± 17.5 for high TL, respectively. The age (months) and weight at first service (kg) according to the TL of the PU were 25.0 ± 2.0 and 336.0 ± 15.3 for low TL, 23.6 ± 2.0 and 359.5 ± 12.6 for medium TL and 20.5 ± 1.5 and 366.0 ± 10.1 for high TL, respectively. The age and weight at puberty and at first service varies according to the technological level of the PU.

Resumen El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar el nivel tecnológico (NT), la edad y peso a la pubertad y primer servicio en vaquillas Romosinuano (RO) en México. Se emplearon 10 unidades de producción (UP). Las UP resultaron con un 30.0%, 40.0% y 30.0% de NT bajo, medio y alto, respectivamente. La edad (meses) y peso a la pubertad (kg) según el NT de las UP fue de 22.0 ± 2.0 y 305.4 ± 15.3 para NT bajo, 20.2 ± 1.0 y 326.3 ± 10.0 para NT medio y 18.0 ± 1.6 y 340.2 ± 17.5 para NT alto, respectivamente. La edad (meses) y peso al primer servicio (kg) según el NT de las UP fue de 25.0 ± 2.0 y 336.0 ± 15.3 para NT bajo, 23.6 ± 2.0 y 359.5 ± 12.6 para NT medio y 20.5 ± 1.5 y 366.0 ± 10.1 para NT alto, respectivamente. La edad y peso a la pubertad y primer servicio varía según el nivel tecnológico de la UP.

ABSTRACT The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect of condensed tannins (CT) containing in the foliage’s on dry matter intake and organic matter (DMI and OMI), dry matter digestibility (DMD) and methane (CH4) emissions in sheep fed a basal ration of Pennisetum purpureum grass. Four hair sheep with an average live weight of 21.6±2.0 kg were allotted to four treatments in a 4 x 4 latin square design. The treatments were P. purpureum (PP), P. purpureum + Havardia albicans (PPHA), P. purpureum + Bursera simaruba (PPBS), and purpureum + Acacia pennatula (PPAP), the foliage of tree was included 300 g/kg DM of the ration. Intake, digestibility of DM and total methane emissions (L/d) were recorded for periods of 23 h when sheep were housed in open-circuit respiration head boxes. Intake and digestibility of the dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) between treatments PP, PPHA, PPBS and PPAP, were not affected by inclusion the foliage’s of trees in the ration (P>0.05). When the production of methane was expressed in L/kg of DMI, OMI or neutral detergent fiber intake, the results were similar between treatments (PP, PPHA, PPBS, PPAP) (P>0.05). It is concluded that CT contained in the foliage of Havardia albicans, Acacia pennatula y Bursera simaruba not affected the CH4 emissions an levels of incorporation as 30 % of ration DM, since there are no effects on DMI, OMI, DMD and molar concentration of volatile fatty acids.

RESUMEN El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de los taninos condensados (TC) contenidos en el follaje de arbóreas tropicales, sobre el consumo de materia seca y orgánica (CMS, CMO), la digestibilidad de la materia seca (DMS) y emisiones de metano (CH4) en ovinos alimentados con una ración basal de pasto Pennisetum purpureum. Cuatro ovinos de pelo con un peso vivo promedio de 21.6±2.0 kg se sometieron a cuatro tratamientos en un diseño cuadro latino 4 x 4. Los tratamientos fueron P. purpureum (PP), P. purpureum + Havardia albicans (PPHA), P. purpureum + Bursera simaruba (PPBS), y P. purpureum + Acacia pennatula (PPAP); el follaje de las arbóreas se incluyó en 300 g/kg de MS de la ración. El consumo, la digestibilidad y la producción total de metano entérico se midieron por periodos de 23 h. La producción de metano se midió en cajas de respiración de circuito abierto. El consumo y digestibilidad de la MS y materia orgánica (MO) entre los tratamientos PP, PPHA, PPBS y PPAP no se afectaron por la inclusión de los follajes de arbóreas en la ración (P>0.05). Cuando la producción de CH4 se expresó en L/kg del CMS, CMO o consumo de fibra detergente neutro los resultados fueron similares entre tratamientos (PP, PPHA, PPBS y PPAP) (P>0.05). Se concluye que los TC contenidos en el follaje de Havardia albicans, Acacia pennatula y Bursera simaruba no afectaron las emisiones de CH4 al nivel de incorporación de 30 % de la MS; tampoco se observaron efectos en el CMS, CMO, DMS y concentración molar de ácidos grasos volátiles.

Abstract The objective of this paperwas to study the effect of yield of Brachiaria humidicola cv Chetumal grass at different frequencies and intensities of grazing. The cutoff frequencies of 21 and 28 d and the intensities of 9-11 and 13-15 cm were evaluated, which were randomly distributed in a random block design with 2*2 factorial arrangement with three replicates. Management effects on dry matter accumulation were observed, with accumulation at lower frequency and light grazing intensity being greater. Forage production had a seasonal distribution of 66, 26 and 7% in the rainy season, north and dry seasons, respectively. The leaf ratio in harvested forage was 20, 30 and 86% for north, dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Reductions in dry matter digestibility were observed in the north and rainy seasons as the cut interval increased. The crude protein with severe grazing was 11, 10 and 17% higher in the north, dry and rainy times than with light. It is concluded that the highest forage production was obtained when harvesting at a light intensity of 13-15 cm, every 28 d and the highest protein content and digestibility was obtained when the forage was harvested at severe intensity every 21 d.

Resumen El objetivo de la investigación fue estudiar el efecto del rendimiento del pasto Brachiaria humidicola cv Chetumal a diferentes frecuencias e intensidades de pastoreo. Se evaluaron las frecuencias de corte de 21 y 28 d y las intensidades de 9-11 y 13-15 cm, que se distribuyeron de forma aleatoria en un diseño de bloques al azar con arreglo factorial 2*2 con tres repeticiones. Se observaron efecto del manejo en la acumulación de materia seca, siendo mayor la acumulación a menor frecuencia e intensidad ligera de pastoreo. La producción del forraje tuvo una distribución estacional del 66, 26 y 7% en épocas de lluvias, nortes y seca, respectivamente. La proporción de hoja en el forraje cosechado fue de 20, 30 y 86% para las épocas de nortes, seca y lluvias, respectivamente. Se registraron reducciones en la digestibilidad de la materia seca en las épocas de nortes y lluvias al aumentar el intervalo de corte. La proteína cruda con pastoreo severo fue 11, 10 y 17% mayor en las épocas de nortes, seca y lluvias que con el ligero. Se concluye que la mayor producción del forraje se obtuvo al cosechar a una intensidad ligera de 13-15 cm, cada 28 d y el mayor contenido de proteína y digestibilidad se obtuvo cuando el forraje se cosecho a intensidad severa cada 21 d.

Abstract: Breeds of hair sheep play an important role in animal production in tropical regions; however, their nutrient requirements have not been determined to the same extent as those of wool breeds. Due to the environmental conditions of the tropical regions (climate, quality and availability of feedstuffs), it is reasonable to hypothesize that energy requirements and efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy (ME) may be different between hair and wool breeds of sheep. Information available on hair sheep shows a large discrepancy regarding energy requirements. Based on available literature data for female sheep, ME requirement for maintenance (MEm) was 419±129 kJ/ kg BW0.75 (mean ± standard deviation) and for the male 388±123 kJ/kg BW0.75. The requirement of net energy for gain (NE g ) ranged from 8.75 to 14.06 kJ/g (11.63±1.86 kJ/g). The efficiency of ME utilization for maintenance (km ) and gain (kg ) were 0.66±0.02 and 0.42±0.04, respectively. This review indicated also that information is scarce for adult ewes at different physiological stages (maintenance, lactation, or pregnancy). More work is required regarding estimates of nutrient requirements of hair sheep in order to develop adjustments to existing nutrition models to predict animal’s response under the conditions prevailing in the tropics (animal type, environment and feedstuffs available).

Resumen: Los ovinos de pelo juegan un papel importante en la producción animal en las regiones tropicales; sin embargo, sus requerimientos nutricionales no se han determinado en la misma medida que los de las razas de lana. Debido a las condiciones ambientales de las regiones tropicales (clima, calidad y disponibilidad de alimentos), es razonable la hipótesis de que los requerimientos de energía metabolizable (EM) y la eficiencia de utilización de la EM pueden ser diferentes entre los ovinos de razas de pelo y de lana. La información disponible en ovinos de pelo muestra una gran discrepancia en cuanto a las necesidades de energía. Con base en datos de la literatura disponible para hembras ovinas, el requerimiento de EM para mantenimiento (EMm) fue de 419±129 kJ/kg PC0.75 (media ± desviación estándar) y para machos fue 388±123 kJ/kg BW0.75. El requerimiento de energía neta para la ganancia de peso (EN g ) varió de 8.75 a 14.06 kJ/g (11.63±1.86 kJ/g). Las eficiencias de utilización de la EM para el mantenimiento (k m ) y la ganancia de peso (kg ) fueron de 0.66±0.023 y 0.42±0.044, respectivamente. Esta revisión también indicó que la información es escasa para ovejas adultas en diferentes etapas fisiológicas (mantenimiento, lactancia y gestación). Se requiere más trabajo de investigación con relación a la estimación de las necesidades de energía de los ovinos de pelo, con el fin de hacer ajustes a los modelos existentes de alimentación, con el objetivo de predecir la respuesta de los animales con la condición que prevalece en los trópicos (tipo de animal, medio ambiente y alimentos disponibles).
